Tyreik Burton went “streak ball” on Indian River in the last 90 seconds of the third quarter in the opening round of the DIAA boys' basketball tournament Feb. 26, scoring 11 unanswered points, including three 3-pointers, in 90 seconds to give Cape a 54-44 lead entering the final period.

Cape went on to win 72-59 in a game where the Vikings trailed by six at halftime. It was a slog-through-the-bog type of ball game filled with frustrating turnovers while Indian River did what they do, which is live on the edge and push the pace of the game.

“Tournament time, the name of the game is survival,” said coach Steve Re, whose Vikings have made it past the first round of the tournament for the third year in a row.

Burton and Toney Floyd both had big games while Jon Warren, who was in foul trouble in the second half, had a nice dunk to start the fourth quarter. Cape outscored the Indians 30-14 in the third quarter, and that was essentially the ball game.

Burton, who started slow, led all scorers with 25 points followed by Floyd with 21 and Warren with 11.

Solomon Cox finished with nine points while David Kwan pulled down double figures in rebounds.

The Indians were led by Jaevon Holland with 20 and Kei Juan Major with 13.

The Vikings now go to The Cave to take on the Woodbridge Raiders, the Henlopen Conference champions. Woodbridge is 18-3 heading into the game, while Cape improved to 13-8.
