Source: Submitted Members of Rehoboth Area and Delmarva chapters of UNICO meet to plan the first Delaware District 1 Brian Piccolo Awards Ceremony. Around the table (l-r) are Jason Falcone, Ed Mason, Mary Catania, Vince Catania, Delmarva Chapter President David Jones, Christine Jones, Dina Lazzatti Burgstiner, District Governor Maria Teresa Sachele-Morrison, Heather Jenkins and future UNICO member Tyler Jenkins.

UNICO National, the largest Italian-American service organization in the United States, founded in 1922, has two chapters in Sussex County, Rehoboth Area Chapter and Delmarva Chapter.

Members of both chapters met Jan. 7 and Feb. 1 to plan for the inaugural Brian Piccolo Awards Ceremony to be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 27, at Nicola Pizza on the Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.

This national honor will be awarded to an outstanding area high school athlete, male or female, of Italian-American heritage who exhibits the qualities of courage, friendship, loyalty, teamwork, dedication, sense of humor and anti-bias, of which the legendary Brian Piccolo was a role model.

Local area high school athletic directors will receive packets containing information and an application in late February.

Sponsorships and donations are requested from area business to support this worthy program. Proceeds will be used for the awards, to administer UNICO district programs and to donate to local and national charities such as cancer research, Cooley ’s anemia,  mental health, Italian studies, scholarships and more.

For more information or to donate, contact UNICO Delaware District Gov. Maria Teresa Sachele-Morrison at 302-226-0620 or mtmbeach@comcast.net.
