Unitarian Universalists to hold Water Service Sept. 1Ceremony celebrates community connection
The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold a special Water Service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 1, an annual ceremony to celebrate their inherent connections to each other and the world community. Members and visitors are invited to participate in this family-friendly tradition held each fall at the beginning of the new church year. UUSD is at 33739 Marsh Road in Lewes.
Members bring a small amount of water from a place they have traveled or a sample of water that has significance for them. During the service, people one by one pour their water together into a large bowl. As the water is added, the person who brought it tells why this water is special. The combined water is symbolic of the diversity of their shared traditions coming from many different sources as well as the inclusiveness of the community to all traditions and beliefs. This intergenerational service features “A Story for all Ages” on the theme of water and celebrating their children’s connection to their community and furthering their understanding of how the world is a single place.
The Rev. D. Michael Smith, minister of the UUSD congregation, will explain that Unitarian Universalists affirm and promote seven principles and the sources of faith from which they are drawn rather than a creed or sets of dogma. The principles represent the backbone of this community in which they participate and the covenant to society and the world.
For example, they strive for a world community with peace, liberty and justice for all, or in other words, to build a fair and peaceful world. The Water Ceremony is an expression of these commitments.
The water they hold in their hands is the same water that people hold in their bodies, which is the same water that rains down upon their shoulders, which is the same water that is in oceans, lakes, cities, this country and the world.
Everyone is welcome to attend services at 10 a.m., Sundays. UUSD is a welcoming congregation that provides a liberal spiritual home for people of all faiths valuing diversity, and social and environmental justice.
