The Upper Crust at 7 East Market St. in Georgetown is exhibiting dual artists Joseph and Karen Owens until Saturday, Sept. 27. On Thursday, Sept. 18, there will be a Meet the Artist  reception from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at The Upper Crust, where individuals can discuss the Owens' composition with them. There is no charge and light refreshments will be served.

In addition, a wine and cheese reception will be held at the café Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend the reception and there is no charge for metered parking after 4:30 p.m.

The husband/wife duo has been inspired by their mutual love of art. Karen paints with a traditional flair and her favorite medium is watercolor while Joe does abstract painting using acrylic paints and adds different mediums available for some interesting textures. Although they work with completely different mediums, they enjoy each other’s creations.

Admiring lighthouses actually brought the two together and engaged them in the art field. Karen loves painting portrait lighthouses and Joe started building lighthouse models. Joe’s lighthouses are handcrafted either from copies of plans of the original structure obtained from the National Archives, or he builds them from pictures from other sources.

Joe and Karen are founding members of Gallery 107 and have help formed the Nanticoke River Arts Council in Seaford, Delaware. Gallery 107 offers not only beautiful art created by local artists, but offers many different classes for adults and children. Karen teaches two classes, 6-9 years old and those from 10 on up two Saturdays a month. Karen’s dream is to continue this service to the community to make sure children understand that art can be a vital building block in their lives.

Joe and Karen will also be at the 2014 Historic Georgetown Art Crawl that will be held in conjunction with the Farmer & Foodie Festival Saturday, Sept. 13. Contact Karen at the “Meet the Artist,” the Georgetown Art Crawl or directly at Ework53@yahoo.com.

Part of The Upper Crust’s commitment to the community is to offer a gallery space to local artists who might not otherwise have an opportunity to show their works. Contact Bruce at bruce@theuppercrust.info or 302-856-2300 to schedule a time to stop in with images of work for approval and to possibly schedule an exhibit date.
