Vanilla fudge ice cream links burglar to crimes
Police investigating a burglar alarm in Lewes July 14, found a man parked with items police say he stole, including an ice cream treat.
Police went to the Taramino Place Apartments at 10:50 p.m. after an alarm activated in a unit, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
They found Richard M. Walls, 47, of Rehoboth Beach, in his black Pontiac Sunfire with a flat-screen television, a cable box and controllers inside the vehicle, Fournier said.
Police also found a frozen vanilla fudge drumstick ice cream in the console of the car, an item that a previous burglary victim said was stolen from his freezer, along with the TV and cable box, Fournier said.
Police found pry marks on several other apartment doors, but no entry was made, he said.
Police charged Walls with second-degree burglary, four counts of second-degree attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, theft under $1,500 and five counts of criminal mischief. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $34,500 cash bond.
