Veteran Builders president receives Healthcare Constructor designation

Jul 03, 2014

Delmarva Veteran Builders, the region’s only commercial construction firm dedicated to bringing employment to U.S. armed forces veterans, announced that Chris Eccleston, president and owner, has earned the designation of Certified Healthcare Constructor. The CHC is a national credential that distinguishes an individual as being among an elite group of healthcare construction professionals.

“The demand for healthcare facilities in our region is growing as our aging population grows,” said Eccleston. “I went through this certification process because I wanted to ensure that our community healthcare projects are delivered with the highest regard for patient safety and understanding, and implementing programs such as life safety and infection control are so critical to delivering a successful project. Every person in our community will be using a healthcare facility at some point in their lives, so having the mind-set that the entire community is our client brings a heightened awareness to the construction team.”

Eccleston served six years in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear machinist mate. Upon returning home, he merged the skills he learned in the service with his lifelong interest in construction, and was quickly hired by local contractor Gillis Gilkerson. During that time he earned a bachelor’s degree in construction management from University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and LEED AP certification for the development of sustainable ('green') buildings from the U.S. Green Building Council. In 2013, Eccleston established Delmarva Veteran Builders, a certified veteran-owned small business. DVB delivers general contracting and construction management through the creation of job opportunities for local United States armed forces veterans.
