VIA to hold Chicken Plunge Sept. 7 in Rehoboth BeachProceeds to benefit Rehoboth Beach Patrol and VIA Capital Campaign
The Village Improvement Association is holding a benefit, the Chicken Plunge, on Saturday, Sept. 7 - the perfect event for people who find the prospect of a plunge in February too cold.
The second annual VIA Chicken Plunge begins at 11 a.m. with registration at the north end of the Boardwalk near the Henlopen Hotel on Grenoble Place.
"We call this event the Chicken Plunge because, unlike the winter ocean plunge, participants don't have to jump into a chilly ocean," said Susie Dominguez, a planning committee member. "We'll even have a little pool on the Boardwalk for those who don't want to plunge into the ocean. People of all ages are welcome."
Money raised from the event will go to the Rehoboth Beach Patrol and to the VIA's Capital Campaign fund. The Rehoboth Beach Patrol used its proceeds from the 2012 plunge to purchase a beach wheelchair.
Activities, including children's games, face painting, kites on the beach and a fire truck demonstration, begin at 11 a.m. The plunge will be at 1 p.m., and the beach party continues until 2 p.m.
Dominguez said hot dogs, chili dogs, chicken nuggets and wings, chips, soda and water will be for sale. A free cupcake will top off the meal.
Local major sponsors supporting the Chicken Plunge include Funland, Arena's, the Cape Gazette, Chick-fil-A, Dos Locos, Jack Lingo Realtor, Beach Waves, Cake Break, Nicola Pizza, The Med Spa, Azura and Grotto Pizza.
Prizes will be given to plungers who collect sponsors and pledges of $50 or more, the oldest plunger, the youngest plunger and the plunger who recruits the most participants. Local merchants have provided prizes, and a raffle will be held with a variety of generously donated items.
The event costs $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under with a participating adult. For more information visit www.rehobothbeachvia.org or call Stephanie at 302-945-0575. The plunge will take place rain or shine; severe weather date is Sept. 21.
