Volunteers to be honored at 21st Annual Celebration of Kent County Tourism Nov. 2
Kent County Tourism will host the 21st Annual Celebration of Tourism from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, at the Sheraton Dover Hotel. The event will include a buffet lunch, wine and beer sampling, the Best of Kent County silent auction and the awards ceremony.
Fifer Orchards of Wyoming will be honored as the Tourism Attraction of the Year for 2012. The business is a third-generation farm focusing not only on farming but also agritourism. Fifer Orchards' farm market and innovative events such as the seasonal peak parties and farm to fork porch dinners attract local residents and visitors from April through December each year.
WSFS Bank will be recognized as the Tourism Partner of the Year. WSFS celebrated 180 years as a Delaware-based business this year and was the presenting sponsor for the 79th Annual Dover Days Festival. The bank took an active role in helping promote the festival by involving all 41 branches statewide and providing a corps of staff members to volunteer during the event.
The men and women of Dover Air Force Base, who gave hundreds of hours over the past two years at the Dover Days Festival, Dover Days Car Show, Amish Country Bike Tour and the Delaware Wine & Beer Festival, are being recognized as Volunteers of the Year. Many members of the military, including commanders of the 436the Airlift Wing and the 512th Reserve Airlift Wing, and their families gave more than 1,000 hours of service.
“As is tradition, the Tourism Person of the Year will not be announced until the day of the event,” said Cindy Small, executive director. “Our staff is very excited because this honoree has given hundreds of hours over the past two years for the benefit of the tourism industry in Kent County.”
The buffet luncheon will consist of honey pecan chicken, salmon in lemon dill sauce, herb roasted potatoes, asparagus, tossed salad, pasta salad, breads, coffee and tea. Dessert will be fall-themed cupcakes designed by Tricia Vicks, owner of Pattycakes in Dover.
The Best of Kent County silent auction will include local art by Arden Bardol, Stephanie Seeman and A.J. Adriance; a children’s birthday party at the Biggs Museum; tickets to many Kent County theater and musical productions; a Kindle e-reader; jewelry, purses and accessories; several local and beach-area overnights; a shopping spree; designer cupcakes and more.
