Warrior Spirit Band to perform at Bethany Fourth of July celebration

Jun 28, 2014

The Bethany Beach Fourth of July Parade will take place Friday, July 4. In addition to the traditional marching bands and bands on trucks to be featured in the procession, the Town of Bethany Beach announces the addition of Warrior Spirit Band to perform that evening on the bandstand following the 7:15 p.m. awards ceremony.

Warrior Spirit Band is composed of disabled or combat-wounded veterans who share their musical talents in order to empower other wounded soldiers and support their recovery programs. Their genre is an eclectic one, mixing rock, blues and country to appeal to diverse age groups while crossing social barriers. Paul Delacerda, the group’s founder, is a former infantry paratrooper and musician who was injured in an IED blast in Iraq.

In May 2009, he was told his injuries would prevent him from ever playing drums again.  Delacerda’s military training to persevere over obstacles is what led him to form the Warrior Spirit Band. This nonprofit group has since been gathering sponsors and raising awareness through media exposure including CNN and MSNBC.

Bethany Beach Mayor Jack Gordon said, “Our parade traditionally features the First State Detachment Marine Corps League and the 287th National Guard Band. Warrior Spirit Band is an ideal addition to a lineup that shows community support for military veterans and their transition to civilian life.” The band’s Bethany performance will officially kick off their nationwide tour.
