We already have major road problems in Lewes

By Patricia Kaminsky | Aug 21, 2014

Sadly, in my hometown heart I believe every last empty space in and around Lewes will be occupied, given the tenacity of the real estate moguls. As I read the discussions swirling around the Showfield project, especially the Gills Neck/ Kings Highway/Dartmouth Drive plans, one observation seems to be missing, what about the Gills Neck/Savannah Road/ Front Street/ Pilottown Road/New Road side of town?

I use Front Street almost every day and it is in very poor condition considering the amount of trucks and businesses that it supports. The corner of Front and Savannah is horrendous in the summer. Can someone assure me that all those new people from Showfield will not turn left for a shortcut to the beach or that all the other developments will not be looking for a New Road exit to Route One?

I think when Kings Highway becomes more of a nightmare than it already is, traffic through town to New Road will bring a whole lot of hand ringing. New Road itself is not the best when it rains a lot. Of course it leads to Nassau and there probably would have to be two lights - one on the south side and one by the old market, not to mention some road straightening there too.

If it hasn’t been said before, the elephant on top of the issue is access to Route One.

You can widen/straighten Gills Neck, make Freeman Highway more user friendly, and put circles at Dartmouth until the cows come home, but no one is creating new direct access to Route One and since the Lingo/Townsend mall will never die someone who has the big picture better start thinking big on infrastructure issues. Besides roads, I also hope someone is thinking long and hard on the water table situation. If the moguls want this, make them pay for it up front.
