We're losing qualities that make Lewes special
At Thursday night’s Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission’s public hearing regarding the proposed Showfield development, the presenter for the applicant carefully listed the developments that have grown up around Lewes: Wolfe Point, Wolfe Runne, Senators, Hawkseye, Breakwater, the Cadbury at Lewes Continuing Care Community and asked the project engineer to confirm that Showfield would be “infill” among all these hundreds of homes.
Infill? No!! All of this development is a noose around the small City of Lewes, choking it with traffic and destroying open space.
This week Lewes has been crowded with tourists, shopping, sightseeing and enjoying the lovely town. Lines have been long and parking difficult. Lewes welcomes visitors, but they soon won’t be able to get to it. And the residents who have been cherishing Lewes as a friendly and beautiful community will find that they are essentially trapped in their homes by traffic gridlock and losing the very qualities that made Lewes special.
