West Rehoboth doesn't need a gun shop
I'd like to add my voice to the growing chorus that opposes granting an application for the sale of firearms and guns to the commercial venture Delaware Firearms LLC in West Rehoboth.
While the location for the proposed business, Hebron Road, is commercially zoned,it has historically housed "service" businesses that generally send employees out to customers rather than having customers come to their establishments.
The location is within a half mile of hundreds of homes in the year-round communities of West Rehoboth, Canal Corkran, Canal Pointe, Edgewater Park, The Avenue, Rehoboth Grande and Canal Landing Court, among others.
Residents of all ages, including hundreds of children, would be negatively impacted by having a retail gun business in their neighborhood. In addition, especially during the summer months, Hebron Road and the other roads that border West Rehoboth are heavily used by thousands of bikers, walkers and runners who access the nearby Breakwater Junction Trail.
There are already 19 gun establishments within 25 miles of Rehoboth; one is only eight miles away. Do we really need a gun shop in "The Nation's Summer Capital?" Is that what we want this area to be known for, as a destination to buy weapons? The city of Milton recently had the courage and common sense to deny a gun shop license in a residential area of their town. Please show the same respect and common sense to West Rehoboth and the surrounding neighborhoods and deny the application.
