What's happening at Lewes Farmers Market Sept. 6

On Saturday, Sept. 6, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will open on the grounds of The Lewes Historical Society at 110 Shipcarpenter St. at the corner of West Third and Shipcarpenter streets in Lewes. The market will be open from 8 a.m. til noon. At the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, customers will find the freshest produce Delmarva has to offer, as well as meat, fish, chicken, freshly laid eggs, breads, milk, yogurt, ice cream, plants, herbs, and more as well as fresh flowers for the table.

The HLFM continues its educational series of demonstrations at the market. At 9 a.m., Sharon Fields of Good News Natural Foods, a market vendor, will demonstrate three courses: a healthy fresh greens drink; using a spiral vegetable slicer a no-cook way to enjoy summer's crop of zucchini in salads and to create a raw spaghetti pasta with a fresh tomato basil vinaigrette; and making gluten-free desserts.

At 10:30 a.m., meet Lisa Garfield, a market grower and owner of Calliope Farm and Garden located on the Delmarva Peninsula of Maryland, specializing in organically grown, open-pollinated, heirloom and regional fruits and vegetables as well as many ethnic and exotic varieties, all chosen for qualities of flavor, nutrition and adaptability.

The fun and popular Children's Reading Program at the market takes place 9 to 10 a.m. every Saturday at the School House. The Lewes Public Library is sponsoring this, and Maureen Miller, children's librarian from the Lewes Public Library, reads the stories and does projects with the kids. For ages 3 to 8, but all children are welcome and encouraged to attend with their parents. Each week, a special book is chosen to reflect the themes of growth, change and healthy eating. This week, the featured book is "Eating the Alphabet" by Lois Ehlert.

Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers, and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season. Newsletters for the remainder of the month will highlight featured vendors and selected produce. The newsletter is also posted on the market's Facebook page. The Market continues to process SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information tent at the market to redeem the Bonus Bucks incentive.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market has adopted a policy that pets (with the exception of service animals) are not permitted at the market.

Consistent with its mission, the board of directors of the HLFM is committed to supporting farmers and emerging farmers who grow local fruits, vegetables and produce - a “real” farmers market.
