Thoughts From the Sidelines

Win some, lose some

By Sumner Spence | May 01, 2014

"How 'bout them Flyers!" That was my comment after they dominated the Rangers 5-2 in Game 6 of the division playoff series. Then came Game 7. Sigh. On the bright side, goalie Steve Mason gave a heroic effort and the Flyers surprised everybody by getting as far as they got in the playoffs after a dismal early season.

Basketball news has been really rough to stomach this week but the outcome is a good one. Sterling deserves the banishment. It's really sad that this kind of mentality exists and may we all step up to a level of civility and acceptance that goes far beyond the world of sports. On a lighter note, it's looking better and better for the Miami Heat to win, at least the Eastern Conference. This is thanks to the Indiana Pacers and the Chicago Bulls being out of the contest. For a bit of a change, the media predictions for this finish have been pretty straight on.

The Philadelphia Phillies were over 500 for one day! Losing to the last place New York Mets is just adding insult to injury and the weather sure hasn't helped baseball enthusiasts. Maybe I will be able to say something positive come June.

I have done my best to watch a lot of golf where I can, at least appreciate nice weather somewhere. There are a lot of random tournaments going on working up to the Player's Championship next week in Jacksonville, Fla. That tournament is referred to as the Fifth Major because that is where the PGA headquarters is. Most of the names we are familiar with will be playing - minus Tiger, who is reportedly recovering on pace from his back surgery.

Lastly, the soccer world is in good shape going into the last two weeks of the English Premier League season. This is especially true if you are a Chelsea fan. Their win against Liverpool April 27 was big for them and keeps them in the chase.
