Thoughts From the Sidelines

Women's golf will be more fun to watch than baseball this weekend

By Sumner Spence | Aug 02, 2013

The Phillies have blown themselves out the water with their horrible performance lately! You all know I had high hopes for the Phillies coming out of the all-star break, but with their 1 and 8 road trip, it now means we can forget about being in the playoffs this year. They make it hard to even want to spend the time watching them right now. I hope they don't trade away the entire nucleus of the team going into next year. I would like to see Chase Utley and Cliff Lee remain as a strong foundation for the 2014 season. The trade deadline actually happens Wednesday, Aug. 7, so look for me take on trades in next week's column.

In other sports, the Women's British Open golf tournament is being played this week at St. Andrew's, the oldest golf course in the world. This is only the second time that the Women's British Open has been held there. I actually believe St. Andrew's is a better course for the women to play than the men simply because most of the women cannot drive many of the greens, specifically holes 10, 12 and 18. This makes it a better test of golf for the women in terms of score because there are no women who would be able to pull off birdies or eagles on par 4s like the men can do on such a short course. The main story for this event this year will be watching to see if Inbee Park can get her Grand Slam. I hope it is a close tournament and that Inbee has a chance to win. Check this out on ESPN2 this weekend.

In local golf news, I heard that there have been four holes-in-one at the Midway Par 3 course in the last two weeks. That's pretty amazing no matter what size course you are playing. You have to be a pretty good player to do that! Haven't gotten an official confirmation yet, but stay tuned.

Hard to believe we are heading into August already. Make time to go out and see if you can get that hole in one or just spend some time outside having fun.
