Thoughts From the Sidelines

World Baseball Classic:  Gains for the box office and strains for the players

By Sumner Spence | Feb 14, 2013

This past week there wasn't any big sporting event to talk about, but I'm excited because the baseball season is about to start! Spring training has started early this year because of the World Baseball Classic, which starts the first week of March. This tournament is basically the World Cup of baseball and offers a great opportunity for the baseball offices to cash in!  I don't particularly like the concept because players can get hurt too easily from not being ready to play this soon. Even though most athletes are doing some sort of conditioning off season, the actual game events can spur early injuries. I am a huge baseball fan, so I will be watching every game regardless. I am hoping I can turn all of my readers into baseball fans as well.

This past weekend in golf, Brandt Snedeker finally got what he deserved with a win at the AT&T tournament at Pebble Beach, Fla. He was in contention to win the last two weeks but wasn't really noticed because of the famous names of the winners from those tournaments. This was a much deserved win for him.

Even though there is not much TV coverage, I am looking forward to following the college men's and women's lacrosse season--high schools too!  With our area having great feeder programs and high school successes, this sport has a huge local following.  The start of the season helps bolster us through the last few weeks of a Cape region winter as we look forward to spring! It's been great that there has been a bit of snow this year, but I am one of the ones who is happy to see pictures of it on TV and not out my window!

March Madness is only a month away! In college basketball it will be virtually impossible to pick a favorite for this year's winner. There have been a lot of upsets at the top of the pool. With no dominant team in contention so far this season,  fans can look forward to a very exciting tournament.
