Would You Believe March is Air Force Mustache Month?
Lewes, DE — Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, Air Force Chief of Staff, recently spoke at the annual Air Force Association's Air Warfare Symposium. During his speech he announced that the month of March will officially be known as Mustache March. He asked each of his Major Air Command (MAJCOM) Commanders (4 Star Generals) to participate in a mustache competition. He will announce the winner of the best mustache.at the end of March. My first reaction in reading this was to laugh hysterically at the absurdity of his mustache competition. But then I got mad. That's more mad than the grammatically correct angry. When I told my wife, Linda, about Welsh's cocamamy Air Force Mustache Month, her first response had something to do with him missing two components of his anatomy below the belt and a lot of grey matter between his ears.
I am now beyond angry. I am appalled, incredulous, deeply concerned and sad. This is the same man who has stood by and watched as the Obama Administration has banned Catholic chaplains from Air Force bases, allowed the introduction of turbans and beards to the detriment of morale and esprit de corpse, remained silent while the Congress cut airmen's pensions as well as wounded veteran's care and stood meekly while the Commander in Chief has reduced the ranks of the experienced and dedicated senior officers who are not willing to toe the President's ideological line. But.. he has the time and the gall to come up with his Air Force Mustache Month. How pathetic.
I was proud of my 20 year Air Force career. It was not the career path I had intended. It was due to the opportunity as a very young Captain to work directly for a 4 Star General, Jack Catton, Commander of the Military Airlift Command. He epitomized everything a leader, an officer, a gentleman and a patriot should be. And, he put me on a career path for which I will always be grateful. Today, I venture to say, few young Air Force officers have anyone of General Catton's caliber to emulate as I did.
I can only imagine if General Catton were alive today, and one of Welsh's MAJCOM commanders...he would most certainly tell Welsh where to stick his Air Force Mustache Month.
