YMCA says thanks for Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon

By Ava Cannon and Terry Rasberry | Oct 19, 2012

The 2012 Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon is now history. In its 17th year, the event has become one of the east coast’s favorites. Distances are half mile ocean swim, three-and-a-half mile run, and this year, with the opening of the new Indian River Inlet bridge, the bike course returned to its original 15-mile distance.

With 1,200 registered participants, accompanied by their support groups, the triathlon was again sold-out. Competitors enjoy the well-run event, and often include an extended visit to our resort community. Congratulations to all participants, and thank you to the army of volunteers who assisted.

The triathlon provides a generous $15,000 donation - the proceeds of the race - to the Sussex Family YMCA and the Strong Kids Campaign. With this gift the YMCA will present financial assistance to local kids who would otherwise be unable to participate in Y activities such as swimming lessons, youth sports, after-school enrichment, summer day camp and Y membership. With the help of the DBST and other generous donors, our YMCA will provide assistance valued at over $150,000 in 2012.

A huge event like the Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon would not happen without generous sponsors. And so we offer sincere thanks to the Salvation Army Community Division, Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill, 16 Mile Brewing Company, Rehoboth Beach Running Company, All Wheels Bicycle Shop, Clif Bar, Jimmy’s Grill, The Starboard Restaurant, Hammer Nutrition Ltd, Quality Inn & Suites, CNC Solar, Rehoboth Toy & Kite Company, Beebe Medical Center, Tomato Sunshine, TRICOACH, First State Disposal, Nike Factory Store, Que Pasa Restaurant, USA Triathlon, Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, Brightroom Photography, East of Maui Surf Shop, Energizer Personal Care, Rita’s Water Ice, Jack Lingo, Realtor, Delaware Beach Life magazine, Tri Delaware, and Alley Oop. And a special thanks to the Delaware Department of Transportation, Delaware State Police, Delaware Seashore State Park, and the Dewey Beach Police for accommodating this enormous event.

Thank you to one and all from the YMCA, and thanks from the YMCA’s kids.
